Jason are you ok? Haven't heard from you for years... I really enjoyed your colour reviews and miss them so much... I hope you are okay...God bless you.
When i mix burnt umber and cadmium yellow light, I get a green tone. ... dude I bought transparent brown oxide and it makes ALL the difference. Burnt umber does NOT work- makes it green.
So very interesting, thank you 💙 💙
Thanks so much for the kind comment and for watching! :)
If you can't paint with cheap oils buying more expensive one's will not help.
Well, that's mostly true up to a point. But sometimes really cheap materials can hinder your progress if you are fighting them because they behave in unpredictable ways. But I agree., there's no magic in the paint. You still have to learn and practice to get good! Thanks for watching.
Very nice 👍🍃thank you
Give Rublev a try.
Yes, I love Rublev! They are one of my favorites. I have a couple of videos on my channel specifically about them. Thanks for watching! :)
Pyrrole Rubin, not quinacridone.
What do you think about oxide yellow? Since you have oxide red and brown on your palette.
I have never used the Transparent Oxide Yellow, but I would think it is probably very close to Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna, just maybe a little darker in mass tone. I do use Yellow Ochre which is a bit more opaque and a wonderful color! All the earth colors will be very lightfast. Thanks for watching :)
Hello mr walcot I am a great fan of your chanel! Could you please for the love of god, tell me what is the song/music in the background? Thank you so much?
Thanks for the nice compliment on my videos and for watching! The music in this video is the George Street Shuffle. It's free music provided for use on UA-cam. incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1300035
@@walcottfineart5088 Thank you so much dear Sir. It evokes pleasurable memories in my mind, but i dont know where from.
Great tutorial. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! :)
Really useful tutorial - thanks very much
Extremely helpful - thank you
Thanks for watching! :)
Nice mixing sir. I believe to mix more of a neutral gray color, the colors used have to be cool AND lean cool. So burnt sienna can be mixed usually by mixing orange and blue, but the addition of some black will lean this mix more COOL. Now, mixing this mix with a cool color like ultramarine will do the trick with making neutral looking grays.
Yes with a little work you can get to a nearly neutral gray. But colored grays usually work better as they add visual interest to a painting. Thanks for watching! :)
Where do i get the grey palette
It's a Jack Richeson Grey Matters paper palette. You can find them pretty much at any art supply website and Amazon too. Thanks for watching! :)
Loving your helpful videos 😊
I'm so glad you've enjoyed them! Thanks for watching :)
I absolutely love the products from Rublev especially the oil paints. I have bought almost every color every time I get a paycheck I’m buying more of their products. Their products are the very best and I only use top quality art products. Thanks for the video.
Ruiblev makes great stuff indeed! Thanks for watching :)
Fantastic Channel
That’s awesome! I’ve been painting and this helps so much! Thank you
What colors did you use for the background? Thanks!
thanks Jason so helpful,........,any thoughts on Cranfield paints? from Wales sold at Blick"s read some reviews and they are conflicting, from student grade to professional 🤨
Your content is informative, to say the least, and well presented. EXCEPT for the inane intro music. This is the only site at which I fell compelled to mute for about 10 seconds. Yuck! You can do much better. If nothing else, silence is golden. There is a LOT of gorgeous music out there which is in the public domain.
I just finished watching all 3 videos in this series. My question is could you use dry pastels over chalk paint? I like to paint furniture but was looking for another medium to do artwork over my painted backgrounds. Canvas painting isn’t my thing, although I am always intrigued to watch other artists just create and use color. I have seen a doll artist use pastels and colored pencils on her doll and then seal with something. Have not tried it, but I had never seen anybody use those 2 mediums on plastic. I mostly upcycle my own furniture; wood, leather, fabric….those are my chosen canvases😊 Any thoughts are tips about dry pastels over chalk paint would be appreciated. Thank you!
very cool and informative, thanks a lot!
Good demo. Since the oil penetrates the acrylic gesso on panels or canvas, if I were to use these I would make sure now there is a size layer. I have been leery of claims that the gesso works as a size. So while making my own panels, am applying GAC 100 before putting down gesso or an oil or alkyd ground.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for the comparison, I'll definitely go for the soft pastels. I'm an oil painter looking to try out pastels for plein air.
I recently bought Ultramarine deep from Rembrandt. Is it better than Ultramarine light? Should I buy the light version as well? I would like to know your opinion on the two versions.
I’m curious to know if the Micheal Harding Cremintz you used in the video is the linseed or walnut version?
It was the linseed oil version. Thanks for watching! :)
Ok thanks! I currently use the walnut version and have been wanting to switch to the linseed for the faster drying time. I had read a few things online about people saying the linseed was very stiff and a weird texture but in your video it looks nice and creamy like the walnut version.
I know that I'm like 35 years late, but I appreciate the time you took to put down all your insights.
I'm glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for watching :)
It was so helpful, thank you very much❤

Do you prefer Utrecht of Lukas 1862 >>?
Are you suppose to wipe it off afterwards or just leave it alone ?
You should wipe away any excess that doesn't soak in. It should be a very thin application. Thansk for watching!
Im going to try some blue Ridge for sure ! Thanks for the great video !
Enjoy and thanks for watching! :)
Thank you so much. God bless you. Can u show the boho color mixing? Thanks
Watched your videos they are fantastic tutorial
Ultramarine is cool because it leans towards purple, purple being the coolest color possible
Hello, can you review please or reply direct here about the color artist grade of Lukas red vs Michael harding cadmium red.. I want to buy that color but I can't choose of the two which is good or more pigment color.
Thanks for watching! Really those two colors are different pigments and will behave in different ways so it depends on what you need it to do. Lukas Red is really pyrrole red (PR254) which is a modern organic pigment. It has high color saturation and will make brightly colored tints when mixed with white. It will also have some transparency to it. Cadmium red, while bright red right from the tube, will produce duller tints that are slightly grayish when you mix white in. This is an inherent property of that pigment. Cadmium colors are also very opaque. If you are just looking for a general mixing red to use, then the Lukas is probably more versatile, Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for your informative answer now I decided to buy Lukas red.. Actually a love Michael harding cad red but it is very expensive per tube of 40ml or the big tubes I prefer tube to buy of Cadmium red like 200ml for my big size of painting so that it doesn't run out immediately then Lukas 1862 is quite affordable so the price compares to other color brands like Michael harding, Old holland professional grade the tube is super expensive.
Very thanks again. I love your all tutorials about oil paint I learn so much as a oil painter.😀
Jason, You are a treasure. I just discovered your videos and am devouring them because they're so fascinating! I respect the kind of research you do with all the paint brands and I'm taking notes of your descriptions during your demonstrations and comparisons.
Thanks so much for that kind and wonderful comment! I'm so glad you've enjoyed my videos :) Thanks for watching!

Titanium white is actually the lightest hue of blue in the world. Is why I try to never use it except for extreme hi-lights and limited opaque mixes of light blues or pinks. It will always slightly change the hue because it is a blue color. Lead white leans a tiny bit warm. Basically, the lightest yellow in the world. Flake white is more neutral but more opaque as other Titaniums. I use a lot of Barite white for making my tints. It will never change the hue whatsoever, lightens the color up. It comes out of the tube nasty looking is why I think most folks shy away. You can use as much as you need to lighten any hue and not worry about it changing the hue and it's cheap. It will cause opaque colors to become more transparent for water and sky or sun shining through the backside of an object such as tree foliage or an human ear. You can create better mid-tone shadows with it because shadows are not objects. Rather they are a floating tone of light over surfaces. I use to only use titanium white for everything. It drove me crazy, turning my Prussian blue to an intense color.
If you didn't work in the shadow, this would be much easier for us to see.
Thank you. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊. Great and simple explanation and comparissons
Thanks for watching! :)
Very good
Marvellous! Thank you so much. Xxxxx❤❤❤
Best demonstration ever! Thank you.
Great tips on warming the varnish and using the sponge brushes (or could use throw away cheap brushes?) I have recently tried the synthetic varnishes, like Gamvar, and they are way more problematic to apply plus the finished look is not as good as Damar. One question though, how long is pre mixed Damar picture varnish good for? I have some that has been laying around for years and still seems fine.
Great question! I have found that traditional Damar varnish has a super long shelf life. If it is still liquid and not yellowed it is probably fine to use. I have tried Gamvar and it's OK, but it can sometimes bead up which is a pain. I would not recommend cheap bristle brushes because they are very likely to lose hairs and you'll be picking them out of the varnish. The foam ones work really well. Thanks for watching! :)
@@walcottfineart5088 thank you ❤
Hat brush are you using please the size style
Nvm, you answered it. Did you flip the ultramarine and phthalo for warm and cool blues? I thought ultramarine is warm and phthalo cool 😮
I was a big fan of Gamblin for a decade, but unfortunately they are completely unresponsive to artists questions and have proven unreliable for their lightfastness ratings (stay away from their Flake White Replacement, for example, it turns orange in a year and a half)
Love the purple shirt! 😂
